When her parents and young brother die in a plane crash, Carolyn Weber, aged 11, comes to live with her beloved aunt and uncle, Mary Beth and Leonard Hart. Popular and gently lovable, the two give their young niece a secure and happy home-life. Aunt Mary Beth is deeply admired in Beltwood. Carolyn, heiress to a fortune, soon learns through her aunt that some of Beltwood’s families are not so fortunate, and she includes Carolyn in her visits to people in need. When Carolyn finishes high school, determination and urging from Aunt Mary Beth are required to launch Carolyn into an independent life, and the girl dutifully graduates from university, develops a successful career of her own and meets the man she wants to marry. Not too far from Beltwood, she settles happily into her niche in life. Tragedy brings everything to a standstill when Aunt Mary Beth dies following a brain tumor operation. Carolyn is still holding her aunt’s hand, begging her to return, when, after fifteen minutes, the hand jerks — and her aunt returns to life. Carolyn’s great joy becomes abject horror when she sees the cruel eyes of a stranger staring out at her, a being in the body of her aunt who sets out to gather power for herseif and to destroy Carolyn’s private life and turn her into a personal slave. Fire destroys Carolyn’s business and kills two of her employees; her engagement is broken, and it is when her aunt becomes a popular television personality that Carolyn begins to find devious ways to destroy the horror that occupies her aunt’s body.
